abruzzo

Pescara is a lively and modern city, animated in every season by the wide and equipped riviera, ideal destination for those looking for relaxation, fun and beauty just steps from the sea.

But Pescara is not only sea: it is also a place rich in history and culture. Its roots go back to the Neolithic, with the village of Colle Orlando dating back to about 6,000 years ago. In Roman times, the city was known as Ostia Aterni, an important commercial hub along the Adriatic coast.

The historical and artistic heritage of the city is wide and varied, with many places to visit:

  • The Ponte del Mare, symbol of the city and the largest cycle-pedestrian bridge in Italy, offers a spectacular view of the riviera.
  • The Ponte Ennio Flaiano, named after the famous writer and journalist from Pescara, connects the two banks of the river, combining functionality and design.
  • The Nave, a charming fountain in marble of Carrara, work of the sculptor Pietro Cascella.
  • The Cathedral of San Cetteo, where is kept the tomb of the mother of Gabriele D’Annunzio, Luisa, and a fine painting by Guercino donated by the same poet.
  • Museum Villa Urania, elegant 19th century Art Nouveau villa, houses a fine collection of art.
  • Museum of the People of Abruzzo, located in the remains of the sixteenth-century fortress, tells the history and traditions of the region.
  • Museo Civico Basilio Cascella, dedicated to the works of the famous family of artists from Abruzzo.

Finally, Pescara also conquers at the table. The local cuisine is an explosion of authentic flavors: from brodetto alla pescarese to spaghetti alla chitarra, from gnocchi with scampi to porchetta, until the famous arrosticini. A real feast for the palate!

In the heart of the historic center of Pescara is the house where Gabriele D’Annunzio was born, now transformed into a museum. The original rooms, antique furnishings and documents on display tell the life and work of the famous poet, offering a fascinating journey into the world of Dannunziano.

D’Annunzio Pine Forest

A green oasis close to the sea, D’Annunzio Pine Forest is a natural lung in the center of Pescara. With its shady paths, lakes, Mediterranean flora and equipped areas, it is the ideal place to relax, walk or play sports surrounded by nature.

Known as the “crib village” for its timeless charm, Abbateggio retains its ancient appearance, immersed in the quiet and green landscapes of Majella.

Walking in the heart of the village is like taking a leap back in time: the houses, built with the characteristic white stone of the Majella, offer evocative and authentic views. The visit can only start from the oldest part of the country, exploring the spectacular rocks of Majella, which frame this enchanted place.

Among the monuments not to be missed are the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Elcina and the Church of Madonna del Carmine, all places that tell the history, faith and art of this small community in Abruzzo.

For those who love nature, excursions in the Valle dell’Orfento, in the wild heart of the Majella National Park, offer the opportunity to discover the environmental, historical and cultural treasures of one of the most suggestive areas of the entire region.

A few kilometers from the village, is the Giumentina Valley, where you can admire the tholos, ancient stone huts dating back to the Paleolithic, extraordinary evidence of prehistoric architecture.

Do not miss the Ecomuseo of the Valle del Lejo, a fascinating structure immersed in a unique natural scenery, which enhances the mining history of the area through industrial archaeology.

And to conclude the visit with taste, you can not miss a taste of the typical dishes based on farro, native cereal of this land. In summer, the spelt salad is the queen of the table, while in the colder seasons the protagonist becomes the hot and tasty spelt minestro. Two delicacies to try… depending on the season and your curiosity!

Perched on the rolling hills overlooking the Tavo valley, Loreto Aprutino is one of the most fascinating villages in the hinterland of Pescara, where art, history and rural traditions are harmoniously intertwined.

Walking through its stone streets, you immerse yourself in an atmosphere of yesteryear, among historic buildings, ancient churches and breathtaking views. The historic centre houses authentic jewels, such as the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, the Chiola Castle and numerous noble residences.

Loreto Aprutino is also famous for its production of extra virgin olive oil, considered among the best in Italy. An excellence that you can discover by visiting the Oil Museum, housed in a perfectly preserved old mill.

The art also finds space in the Acerbo Museum of Ceramics of Castelli, which collects one of the most important collections of Abruzzo majolica, true works of art of local tradition.

Among its hills and flavors, Loreto Aprutino offers an authentic experience, perfect for those looking for the genuine beauty of the Abruzzo villages and the pleasure of a slow discovery full of emotions.

This itinerary is an original and fun alternative for adults and children who, during their holiday, want to immerse themselves in nature. The route starts in Villavallelonga, a charming village located in the heart of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.

The protagonist of the itinerary is the Bear Museum, dedicated to the symbol of the Park: the marsican brown bear. Inside, information panels, exhibition displays and illustrative videos tell the life, habits and habitat of this fascinating mammal.

The little ones will be able to live an engaging experience thanks to dedicated films and an interactive area designed especially for them, where they can learn by playing and observe nature with new eyes.

The visit to the museum is guided by expert environmental educators, always ready to answer curiosities and make the experience even more interesting and informative.

The route continues outdoors along the Nature Trail, where, in an area fenced in semi-freedom, you can meet Yoga and Sandrino, two beautiful specimens of Marsican brown bear, as well as some deer that live in an adjacent protected area.

After the visit to the museum… begins the real adventure in nature, among trails, views and exciting encounters!

A hike in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is an unmissable experience for those who love wild nature and open spaces. Between majestic peaks, enchanted villages, boundless plateaus such as the Campo Imperatore and panoramic trails, the Park offers breathtaking scenery in every season. Ideal for trekking, hiking, nature photography and to discover the unique biodiversity of the most authentic Abruzzo.
